Why Our Laws Treat Alcohol Better Than A Less Harmful Alternative
Dr Brian Walker addresses the stark reality of substance harm in Western Australia, arguing that current regulations fail to reflect the true dangers posed by alcohol compared to cannabis.

The hidden toll of our double standards
In my decades of medical practice, I have sat across from far too many patients dealing with the fallout of legalised substances. It is a sobering experience to witness the wreckage of lives when the state prioritises tradition over the evidence. We live in a society that treats alcohol as a benign social lubricant while casting cannabis as a grave threat. As a doctor, I see the pathology of this choice every single day. This is not just a disagreement over policy: it is a failure to protect the health of our community.
Alcohol is a pervasive danger. It tears through families, fills our emergency wards, and drains our public resources. Yet we look the other way while treating a far safer alternative as if it were a societal poison. This creates a culture of fear where we ignore the real threat to our children and our neighbourhoods. If we are serious about harm reduction, we must be honest about where the danger actually lies.
We are building a future where evidence matters more than outdated prejudice. If you want to stay updated on these crucial debates as they happen in the chamber, I invite you to subscribe to my YouTube channel for regular updates.
The medical reality of regulation
In the House, I have formally raised the issue because the data is undeniable. The government persists in maintaining a regulatory framework that keeps us locked in a cycle of avoidable harm. When we allow political optics to dictate our laws rather than clinical outcomes, we are essentially gambling with the lives of our citizens. I refuse to accept this status quo as the final word on the matter.
Moving toward an evidence-based future
We need a system that regulates based on risk, not on historical habit. The evidence suggests that alcohol is a significantly greater societal danger than cannabis, yet our laws remain stagnant. My recent motion in the Legislative Council, which you can review in the official parliamentary record, is a call to action for the government to recognise this disparity. It is time to treat both substances with a framework that reflects their true impact on our health and our community safety.
