A prescription for caution
In my years as a GP, I have seen many things. I have seen the resilience of the human body, the intricacies of complex conditions, and the frustration that emerges when modern medicine is held back by outdated bureaucracy. When a patient sits across from me, they are looking for relief. They are not looking for a government form that takes months to process or a regulatory environment that treats their doctor with suspicion. This is not just a desk-bound delay. It is a waiting room where patients remain in pain, wondering why their doctor cannot simply provide the treatment they deserve.
Defining the path forward
I recently stood in the Legislative Council to ask about the government’s progress on long-standing promises to reform how we prescribe medicinal cannabis. We are talking about recommendations that were supported years ago. The goal is simple: to remove the extra, often unnecessary layers of authorisation required for healthcare professionals to treat adult patients. This is the kind of common-sense reform that our community expects. We are science-minded, and we look for evidence-based solutions that prioritise patient care over tired, old-fashioned status quo thinking.

The reality of progress
The government recently provided an update, noting that amendments were finally put in place to remove the obligation for specific patient-by-patient authorisations. While it is a relief to see movement, three years is a long time to wait for a change in procedure. The delay causes unnecessary anxiety for those who rely on these treatments to manage their health effectively. As a legislator, my job is to ensure that when the government makes a commitment to the public, the wheels of change turn with efficiency rather than inertia.
We must remain vigilant. True reform requires constant pressure to ensure that policy keeps pace with medical necessity. You can review the details of this official exchange in Parliament to see exactly how these questions were put to the Minister. If you believe, like I do, that our health system should be designed with the patient at the centre, I encourage you to join Legalise Cannabis WA and help us continue this vital work.
