A necessary step for equality
In the quiet halls of the Legislative Council, the rhythm of progress often feels like a slow, trudging march. Yet, today we took a decisive step forward. I have officially given notice for the Equal Opportunity Amendment Bill 2026. This is not merely a piece of paper or a bureaucratic formality. It is a response to the quiet, persistent exclusion that many of our fellow citizens face everyday.
In my decades of medical practice, I have seen the tangible damage caused by systematic barriers. When people are treated differently due to outdated prejudices or legal loopholes, the health of our entire community suffers. It is the same frustration I felt when a patient struggled to access medicine blocked by needless red tape. We are failing our people when our laws allow inequality to fester in the shadows.

The human cost of hesitation
Why do we tolerate the gaps in our current legislation? When we allow discrimination to persist under the guise of the status quo, we invite a culture of fear. For the families who feel marginalised, this is not a theoretical debate. It is a daily reality that affects their ability to work, study, and thrive. This is the risk we run if we remain stagnant.
We are a tribe of forward-thinkers. We look at the evidence, we listen to the lived experiences of our neighbors, and we demand better. We know that a society that embraces equality is a society that functions better for everyone. My role as a doctor and a representative is to diagnose these societal ailments and offer a cure that is grounded in compassion and logic.
Moving toward a better future
Changing the law is a painstaking process, but it is necessary work. By introducing this Bill, we are declaring that the standard of equality in Western Australia must be raised. My colleagues and I remain committed to evidence based outcomes that provide genuine relief to those who need it most.
