The looming question over Perth Motorplex
Motorsport lovers in Kwinana and beyond have a Saturday to look forward to, with the Perth Motorplex lined up to host a formidable race card. Thirty-four Sprintcars, twenty-four Speedcars, thirty-three Wingless Sprints, and twenty-one Late Models—it’s a sight that pulses with energy and passion, totaling 112 cars and drivers ready to thrill spectators.
But for all the flash and roar of engines, there is a shadow hanging over the beloved Motorplex: the impending launch of a new racetrack at Burswood. What will this mean for the Motorplex’s future? Could it survive the competition or find itself sidelined as attention shifts away?
The unexpected answer from government
These questions weren’t left unasked. As a member representing concerned voices, I sought clarity from those at the helm. What consideration has been given to the viability of Perth Motorplex once Burswood’s track is operational? Is there a business case backing the coexistence of both venues? Impacts on local economies, racing communities, and fans hang in the balance.
Yet, the government's response was surprisingly vague. Motorsport venues like Wanneroo and Kwinana, including Perth Motorplex, will supposedly continue their events as before. The new multi-use track at Perth Park is described as hosting just a single motorsport street circuit annually. No detailed plan or business case was tabled for scrutiny, leaving many wondering about the long-term sustainability of these treasured venues.
Why this matters to all of us
This isn’t just about racing or business rivalries. For families who call Kwinana home or visit to enjoy the spectacle, it’s about community spirit and local heritage. The Motorplex isn’t merely a racetrack; it’s a hub of connection, of weekend exhilaration, of dreams realised in the blur of speed.
The silence on a thorough, evidence-based plan rings alarm bells. Without it, we risk losing more than a facility: we risk fracturing a community, blunting economic opportunity, and disappointing countless enthusiasts.
For people like me, who have spent years diagnosing health and wellbeing, the lesson is clear: neglect, lack of foresight, and poor planning hurt people—sometimes in ways that aren’t immediately obvious.
While the major parties shuffle words, we stand with those who demand clarity, evidence, and respect for Western Australia’s motorsport culture.
