Why is the government hiding the medicinal cannabis driving report from us

The dangerous art of stalling

In my years as a GP, I have seen many conditions that require urgent intervention. When a patient presents with a serious health concern, we do not bury the results in a bottomless drawer. We act. Yet, when it comes to the Medicinal Cannabis and Safe Driving Working Group report, the government prefers the shadows to the light of day.

This is not merely a matter of bureaucratic process. It is a waiting room where patients are left in fear. Every day that the government keeps this report locked away is a day that law-abiding patients are forced to live in anxiety. They worry whether their medicine will lead to a roadside penalty despite no proof of impairment. It is a fundamental injustice to treat responsible users of medicinal cannabis as criminals when they are simply managing their health.

Seeking answers in Parliament

Today in the House, I pressed the government yet again for basic transparency. I asked for a list of the agencies currently reviewing this vital report and, crucially, when they each received it. The response was characteristically thin. We are told the report remains under consideration. This phrase is a shield used to deflect scrutiny and buy more time while the risk to innocent people continues to mount.

We are the ones who look at the evidence. Science-first, forward-thinking, and grounded in the reality of patient needs. While others play politics, we keep pushing for the facts.

The human cost of delay

Consider the vulnerability felt by a patient who relies on treatment but fears the patrol car around every corner. This is the human cost of a government that prefers secrecy over science. It is an indictment of their priorities. When the state knows there is a policy anomaly, they have an obligation to fix it. Instead, they choose to hold the findings hostage.

I will continue to pursue this until we get the answers that Western Australians deserve. You can read the full account of my recent efforts in the official record. If you stand with us in the fight for sensible reform and honest governance, I invite you to join Legalise Cannabis WA today.
