A doctor asks for the truth

In my decades as a general practitioner, I have seen firsthand how bureaucracy can obstruct healing. A patient sits across from me, suffering, only to find that the very systems meant to support them are tied in knots. Today, that frustration reached the floor of the Legislative Council. I put questions to the government regarding the report from the Medicinal Cannabis and Safe Driving Working Group. Specifically, I wanted to know if the Treasurer had seen this report and whether the potential for unfair taxation on our patients had been properly modelled.

The danger of bureaucratic delay

This is not merely a matter of administrative process. It is a waiting room where patients are caught in a legal limbo. While other states grapple with the reality of cannabis-based medicines and driving, Western Australia remains paralysed by indecision. The risk here is clear. If we fail to act based on science, we continue to criminalise patients who are simply trying to manage their health. The government response was a simple, sterile statement that the report remains under consideration. This kind of vague non-answer does nothing to alleviate the anxiety of thousands of Western Australians who just want to live their lives without fear of losing their licence for using a prescribed medicine.

Fighting for a science-led future

The evidence is clear. The government ignored the urgency of the situation today. We cannot allow taxation concerns or departmental sluggishness to derail the health outcomes of our community. As a doctor, I know that health policy must be driven by data, not by the reluctance of a Treasurer to engage with a report. My colleagues and I will continue to press this issue. We refuse to let this drift into the background while patients face the threat of losing their livelihoods simply because they follow a doctor's advice.
