Waiting for a decision that never comes

As a medical doctor, I have spent my career treating patients who simply want to heal and live their lives with dignity. In my years as a GP, I never saw a patient cured by red tape or bureaucratic indecision. Yet, that is exactly what our current laws impose upon those using medicinal cannabis. These citizens are living in a state of constant anxiety, fearful that a simple drive to the chemist or a trip to family will lead to a charge for driving while impaired, even when their medication has long since left their system.

The working group tasked with investigating THC and driving reform finished their job months ago. They handed the government a roadmap. They provided the evidence. Now, that report sits in a dark corner of an office while patients continue to suffer. Lives are being turned upside down because this government refuses to acknowledge the science of impairment versus the mere presence of a substance. It is a failure of leadership that exposes law-abiding people to unnecessary legal risk.

The danger of political silence

I recently stood in the Legislative Council to ask the Minister for Health why we are still waiting for a response to the report. Every day that passes without a legislative change is another day of mounting pressure on families. This is not just a policy delay. It is a recurring nightmare for those who rely on legitimate medicine. When the government remains silent, they create a climate of fear. People are forced to choose between managing their chronic pain and losing their license.

The government responded to my questions by stating they are still considering the recommendations. They are essentially telling us that the suffering of patients is secondary to the convenience of the executive. We see this pattern repeated across so many issues. Evidence is gathered, experts are consulted, and then the process vanishes into a vacuum of procedural delay. We deserve better. We deserve policy that keeps pace with medical progress.
