A home is not a privilege
In my years as a GP, I have seen the profound link between a person’s health and their environment. When you lack stable, secure shelter, your biological clock is set to survival mode. You are exhausted. You are stressed. You are failing. The recent revelations in our state regarding housing corruption are merely symptoms of a much deeper, systemic infection. We are looking at a system that is fundamentally broken, leaving thousands of our most vulnerable people to drift in a sea of bureaucracy.
The numbers do not lie
I recently sought answers in the Legislative Council regarding the true state of our housing crisis. The data, provided in this official record from Parliament, describes a catastrophe. As of the end of March, there were 23,395 applications on the public housing waitlist statewide. Perhaps more disturbing is that 8,114 of those are priority applications. These are citizens who, through no fault of their own, are in desperate need of immediate safety.

The human cost of neglect
The government will talk about availability and turnover rates. They will use the language of asset management and housing zones. But for the family sleeping in a car or a cramped motel room, this is not a numbers game. This is a terrifying reality where the threat of losing everything is constant. While some may focus on the criminal headlines of the day, I believe the true injustice is a state system that keeps thousands of people waiting for years just to find a place to lay their heads at night. It is a waiting room where hope dies.
We have a duty to do better. We must look at the evidence and demand a system that operates with empathy and efficiency rather than indifference. If you are tired of the status quo and want to see a smarter, more compassionate approach to the challenges we face, I invite you to join us at Legalise Cannabis WA. Together, we can push for the real change this state deserves.
