Unlocking Western Australia’s Economic Future Through Industrial Hemp Reform

A wasted opportunity in our soil

In my decades of medical practice, I have learned one simple truth: when the evidence points toward a solution, ignoring it comes at a significant cost. We are currently watching that exact scenario play out with the industrial hemp industry in Western Australia. The Senate has provided a clear, evidence-based roadmap for how we can transform our agricultural landscape. Yet, here we sit, held back by outdated rules and red tape that serve no one.

This is not merely about bureaucracy. It is about the livelihoods of our farmers and the economic health of our regional communities. Every day we delay in harmonising our regulations, we lose momentum in a global market that is rapidly moving forward. The danger of standing still

The risks of inaction are visceral. We are effectively choosing to choke our own potential while other jurisdictions reap the rewards of a modernised hemp industry. From construction materials to innovative manufacturing, the versatility of hemp is staggering. By refusing to reduce unnecessary regulatory burdens and failing to pursue mutual recognition of licences, the government is effectively tying the hands of our most forward-thinking entrepreneurs. We are forcing them to compete with one arm behind their back.

A call for decisive action

I have formally moved that we acknowledge the findings of the federal Senate inquiry and finally act. The official record of my motion lays out exactly what is required: a comprehensive review of the Industrial Hemp Act and a genuine, consultative process that invites industry experts to the table. We do not need more studies that gather dust on a shelf. We need a government willing to implement the recommendations that will drive investment and jobs into our regions.

We are a party of science and common sense, committed to building a future that relies on logic rather than outdated fear. If you share this vision for a modern, prosperous Western Australia, I invite you to join us at Legalise Cannabis WA as we continue to push for the sensible reforms our state deserves.
