Why It Is Time For Drug Checking Services In Western Australia

The silent danger in the crowd

We often talk about the risks associated with music festivals and large public gatherings. As a medical doctor, I have spent my career assessing risks and treating patients who have faced the consequences of dangerous choices. Today, the conversation is shifting toward a more compassionate and practical approach to public safety. Illicit drug use at these events presents a significant risk to health, and we must acknowledge that simply turning a blind eye is not a strategy. It is a failure of care.

When a young person takes a substance at a festival, they are often unaware of exactly what they are consuming. This is not just a matter of policy, it is a waiting room where patients face life altering harm. We need to be realistic about human behaviour.

The evidence is already in

Other Australian jurisdictions have already moved to introduce pill testing and drug checking services. The evidence coming from these trials is compelling. These services do not encourage drug use, rather, they provide an essential opportunity for education, early intervention, and the identification of potentially toxic substances that can lead to tragedy. In my years as a GP, I never saw a patient cured by red tape. We have a clear path forward that focuses on health rather than punishment.

A call for sensible reform

I have formally moved in the Legislative Council to call on the government to initiate a trial of free, confidential pill testing and drug checking services across Western Australia. This must be supported by qualified health professionals and undergo independent evaluation to ensure it is effective. We are a community of forward thinkers who believe in science, compassion, and common sense. While some prefer to hold onto the status quo, we choose to look at what actually works to save lives.
