Why the government keeps the truth about medicinal cannabis driving hidden
Dr Brian Walker questions the ongoing secrecy surrounding Western Australia's ministerial working group findings into THC driving reform, highlighting the urgent need for evidence-based policy for medicinal cannabis patients.

The wall of silence
In the Legislative Council today, I stood to ask a simple, necessary question. Patients across our state are living in a state of suspended animation, waiting for the government to catch up with basic science regarding medicinal cannabis and driving. We know that other states are moving. We know that the conversation is shifting. Yet, here in Western Australia, we remain trapped behind a wall of bureaucratic silence.
I asked the government if they had shared their findings on THC driving reform with their colleagues across the country. The answer was a flat no. It seems even worse than mere inaction: it is a refusal to engage with the reality that thousands of Western Australians face every single day. This is not just about policy paperwork. It is about the families who rely on medicinal cannabis to manage chronic conditions, only to be threatened with losing their livelihoods and their independence simply because our laws ignore how these patients actually function.
Why we need you on board
As a doctor, I have spent my career treating patients based on the best available clinical evidence. I never found that a patient’s health improved by hiding information or burying reports in a drawer. My work serves a community of forward-thinkers who believe in science, compassion, and common sense. If you appreciate these deep dives into the issues that the major parties would rather avoid, I invite you to subscribe to my YouTube channel. The danger of ignoring evidence
The danger here is visceral. It is a waiting room where patients fear the knock on the door or the roadside test that does not measure impairment but merely the presence of a medication they take to survive. When a government treats evidence as a secret, they treat the people they represent with contempt. The current system is forcing honest, law-abiding citizens to choose between their health and their ability to drive to work, to the shops, or to the doctor.
We deserve better. Western Australians deserve a government that puts the safety and wellbeing of its citizens before the comfort of maintaining an outdated status quo. You can read the full exchange from the House to see exactly where they stand. If you are tired of the silence and ready for modern laws based on science, I urge you to join Legalise Cannabis WA today. Together, we can drag these laws into the twenty-first century.
