Why Vaping?
Vaping has been recognised the world over as a valuable quit tool when it comes to cigarettes and nicotine. Only in Australia have we seen the knee-jerk reaction of governments – both state and federal – to ban the practice, and make it harder for people to ease themselves off the coffin nails.
The New Zealand Health Department recognises that vaping is a way for those who are trying to quit smoking to get nicotine with fewer of the toxins that come from burning tobacco. (1)
Here in Australia, specialists at the University of Newcastle have estimated the cancer risk from vaping to be less than 1% (2), compared to tobacco, which causes 13% of all deaths, including from lung, mouth, throat and bladder cancer, as well as a host of other associated diseases. (3)
In LCWA we follow the science, not the empty rhetoric, recognising that vaping is at least 95% less harmful than smoking. (4) We also recognise that those most impacted by the government’s failed, prohibitionist stance have been the small, family-run vape businesses who were trying to do the right thing, and provide a valuable service across our state.
Our $2m Commitment:
That’s why we are committed to doing the work that Labor rejects as being too hard, and properly regulating the industry. To that end, we are committing $2m of the funds raised through the legalisation of cannabis to craft a state-wide policy of acceptance, culminating in legislation that will allow non-nicotine vapes to be sold in specialty stores, while regulating the sale of nicotine itself, and keeping it out of the hands of those under the age of 18.
How You Can Help:
Sign up to the party, volunteer, donate and Vote 1 Legalise Cannabis at the next State Election.
